Joseph Newsom – Black & Grey Realism & Freehand Tattoos

I’m Joseph Newsom, owner and lead artist at Skin City Tattoo & Body Piercing in Tigard, Oregon. I specialize in black and grey realism and freehand tattoo design. I started tattooing in 1991 and opened Skin City in 2000 with the goal of building a studio that combines skill, art, and connection. Every piece I create is designed to fit the body naturally and tell a meaningful story—whether it’s realism, illustrative work, or custom freehand designs built in the moment.

About Joseph & Tattoo Philosophy

  • From a young age, I loved drawing and exploring creative mediums—painting, pottery, and woodworking. My great grandfather was the first to show me how to draw mountains and rivers, sparking my lifelong passion for art and nature.

  • Before opening Skin City in 2000, I wanted to create a space that focused equally on art and the client experience. Over the years, Skin City has grown into a trusted name in the Tigard community for custom tattoos and professional body piercing.

  • When designing tattoos, I focus on composition and flow—creating pieces that enhance the body’s natural shape. I believe the best tattoos tell a story, balancing technical precision with artistic intuition.

  • My background in oil painting influences how I build depth, texture, and realism in tattoos. I’m continually exploring new mediums and techniques to evolve my craft and keep my work fresh and inspired.

  • I’ve been privileged to mentor several artists who now have successful careers of their own. Teaching reminds me that art is about growth, humility, and sharing knowledge.

  • When I’m not tattooing, you’ll find me working on creative projects, remodeling, or cooking. I love traveling with my wife, spending time outdoors, and discovering new experiences that fuel my artistic perspective.

Artist Q & A

  • Nature, storytelling, and the balance of realism and imagination. I aim for designs that look alive and feel meaningful to the person wearing them.

  • The freedom to let a design evolve organically. It allows me to tailor every curve and shadow to the client’s anatomy.

  • Bring ideas, but stay open. The best tattoos come from collaboration and trust between artist and client.

  • We’re a family of artists who care deeply about our craft. Every client gets the same respect, attention, and artistry—whether it’s a small design or a full sleeve.

  • Helping people tell their stories visually—and seeing how tattoos change the way someone carries themselves.
